In the Tales of the Fish Patrol, a collection of seven short stories, London recounts his teenage exploits as an oyster pirate turned fish patroller on the waterways of the San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun bays during the late nineteenth century. He was tired of working long hours at an Oakland cannery for 12 cents an hour; the fifteen-year-old London longed for adventure and an opportunity to make much more money.
