In celebration of Welcoming Week, join Berenice Monroy (On the Move/La Plaza: Nuestra Cultura Cura) for a Historias de Experiencia drop-in mini-storytelling workshop. Historias de Experiencia is a storytelling project for recent migrants and their children. The family members interview each other about their experiences (migrating and growing up in the US), through which they can create poems or stories, which will later be published in a book. During the drop-in workshop, Monroy will guide participants through a mini-storytelling project and share more information about Historias de Experiencia and how to get involved. (Free museum admission available for workshop participants or for visitors who participate in Smithsonian Museum Day by downloading two free tickets).
About Welcoming Week
September 13-22, 2019
Welcoming Week is an annual celebration bringing together thousands of people and hundreds of local events that celebrate the contributions of all of us – newcomer and long-time residents alike – and the role communities play to foster greater welcome and opportunity for everyone. There has never been a more important time for communities to show that they are welcoming to everyone, of all backgrounds, including immigrants and refugees. This is a time to celebrate the values that unite us as neighbors, parents, and colleagues, and to make our towns more welcoming to newcomers and to everyone who calls our community home. Welcoming Week is organized by Welcoming America, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization.
The Tierra de Rosas exhibition features work by Maria de Los Angeles, whose work addresses issues of migration, displacement, identity, and otherness through her drawing, painting, printmaking, and fashion (on view through November 3, 2019). Museum visitors from September 13-22nd are invited to share stories about their personal immigration experience or their family’s experience. The written or illustrated stories will be displayed in the Tierra de Rosas gallery space for the duration of Welcoming Week.
Free with general admission. Pre-registration not required.
Sponsor receives 2 tickets and recognition in the Museum’s marketing materials. Sponsorships are fully tax-deductible.
