Beginning September 19, this beautiful new photography exhibit in Heron Hall is a tribute to Joan Humberstone, in memoriam. A resident of Sebastopol, Joan loved the Laguna and applied to exhibit in Heron Hall not long before her death. Her daughter, Julé Rizzardo, is following through with Joan’s wish to share these stunning images, which will be on display and for sale (benefiting the Laguna Foundation) in Heron Hall through January 3, 2017. Of her mother’s photographs, Julé explains, “The Laguna was a very special place for my mom, and her physical limitations brought her the gift of seeing what is right in front of all of us, if we only open our eyes. She hoped her work would challenge people to take more than a moment to stop and appreciate the Laguna watershed, be good stewards of the land, and find healing powers in the sunrise and beauty in the sunset.”

Joan called the exhibit “Laguna de Santa Rosa: A Gift through the years,” and said “It would be a collection of Laguna images I took since 1996, all seasons, most from within a mile of the Donald B. Head bridge, and most no further than 30 feet away from my car. My equipment has been simple – a 35mm single lens reflex Toshiba gifted to me, and eventual transition to a Nikon digital SLR. Some of these images are printed on my own equipment and others at assorted labs. I am partial to canvas, but there are some traditional framed images as well. I hope my love of the land and reverence for the light can be as healing for others as it has been for me. The beauty of the Laguna is truly the gift that reveals itself every day to all who wish to see.”

The Heron Hall Art Gallery at the Laguna Environmental Center exhibits multiple shows per year of nature-themed art, sales of which supports the educational and conservation efforts of the Foundation.
