Early Struggles for Civil Rights in Sonoma Valley

Thu, August 27, 2020, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Chinese, Black and indigenous peoples faced widespread racist laws and prejudice in 19th-Century California. Charles Stuart, original owner of Glen Oaks Ranch, was an early civil rights champion. In 1878, when anti-Chinese language was being drafted into the California Constitution, he was the only delegate, out of hundreds, to speak up for Chinese immigrant rights. For this courageous act, he received death threats and was hung in effigy in the town of Sonoma.

Join local historian Arthur Dawson for a discussion of California’s anti-Chinese history, the role that Charles Stuart played in confronting it, the struggles of other peoples of the time and how this history lives on today. Presented by Sonoma Land Trust.
