SambaNoma “Jazz Symbiosis”
The music of both North and South America has benefitted from the diverse mixture of peoples – First Nations, European and other immigrants, and, of course, Africans who arrived in this hemisphere of the world in bondage. In the United States, jazz developed out of the African American experience and continues to this day to absorb and incorporate influences from all music styles. Brazil also had many forms emerge out of the Afro-Brazilian experience, with other influences blended in. It’s only natural, then, that when jazz and Brazilian music met, that they would influence each other. Today, SambaNoma will play some of the music we love deriving from that cross-pollination, selections from the mid-twentieth century through today.

SambaNoma is a collective of Sonoma County musicians and music educators united by their love of the infectious rhythms, sensual melodies, and lush harmonies of Brazilian music. SambaNoma’s members bring a wide array of performance experience and study in jazz and Brazilian styles such as bossa nova, samba, baião, xote, and frevo. Their music features an eclectic and dynamic mix of compositions, including works by Toninho Horta, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as original music. SambaNoma has performed at the Healdsburg Jazz Festival’s Jazz Village, The Spirit Bar at the Hotel Healdsburg, Marin Country Mart, Occidental Center for the Arts, and at wineries and galas throughout the North Bay.
