The San Francisco Art Scene of the 1940’s is a kaleidoscopic of illustrated art adventures investigating the decade that would catapult the world into the Beatnik 1950s. Beginning with the dynamic events that culminated with the 1939/1940 Treasure Island World’s Fair, this presentation will delve into the events of World War II that launched the Bay Area into a new cultural era. This story is peppered with art personalities like Ansel Adams, Mark Rothko, Grace McCann Morley, Imogen Cunningham, Richard Die-benkorn, Dorothea Lange, Clyfford Still, David Park, Sargent Johnson, Dorr Bothwell, and many more.

Hosted by San Francisco Art Historian Jeff Gunderson. Jeff has been the Librarian and Archivist at the San Francisco Art Institute since 1981. He has written about the history of California Photography as well as many essays and presentations on the history of the San Francisco art scene. His essay, “A Combination of Accidents: discusses The San Francisco art Scene in the 1940s,”
