Artist’s Statement and Biography

I have made art all my life and at age 78, I am still going strong. My art is very personal.  I have found that if I stay true to those images I later discover I have stumbled on universal themes.  I love theatrical illusion.  I also enjoy creating miniature figures, scenes, worlds representing memories, dreams, simultaneous and interrelated events.  I often use common materials and objects which makes my work both accessible and at times surprising.

Butterflies have shown up in my art for a long time.  I embroidered a butterfly 50 years ago.  When I made custom clothing my logo was a butterfly in a new moon, a symbol of my clothing’s ability to transform the wearer.  I’ve made fantasy butterfly drawings for 20 years.  Butterflies often show up in my sculptures.  I made two hollow, female torsos, the first representing sunrise and filled with butterflies, the second representing sunset and filled with moths (I made the butterflies and moths with shrinking craft sheets).  When I wanted to explore mono printing I turned the unique, printed papers into the butterfly collages you see here.

I have lived on the Sonoma Coast since 1972.  I have actively served and built community in our rural area as a volunteer EMT, organizer and founder of the Coastal Hills Community Project still going strong after 20 years.  CHCP sponsors a weekly Sunday Community Market (at Fort Ross School), email bulletin, library, social and educational events.
