In the past year, La Familia Sana has committed to building bridges, providing free bilingual/bicultural mental healthcare, and ensuring our community has access to emergency financial assistance. As we continue to grow our work and reach, we hope to provide opportunities for our community to gather and learn from each other.
La Familia Sana is honored to present a community showing of FRUITS OF LABOR with Director Emily Cohen Ibañez with a Q & A moderated by Dr. Daniela Domínguez (On the Margins Founder). This SXSW 2021 film selection documents a Mexican American teenager’s dreams of graduating high school when increased ICE raids in her community threaten to separate her family and force her to become the breadwinner for her family. She works long days in the strawberry fields and the night shift at a food processing factory. Set in an agricultural town on the central coast of California, FRUITS OF LABOR is a coming-of-age story about an American teenager traversing the seen and unseen forces that keep her family trapped in poverty. A lyrical meditation on adolescence, nature, and ancestral forces, the film asks, what does it mean to come into one’s power as a working young woman of color in the wealthiest nation in the world?
Thanks to generous local sponsorship, 100% of funds raised through tickets and donations will go directly to our emergency relief funds (Programa de Quitapena Fondos) which provide an emergency safety net for our most vulnerable community members.
